Genital herpes

Genital herpes care is a standard telehealth visit for men and women. Clinicians discuss the same antiviral families used for cold sores: valacyclovir and acyclovir, either for outbreaks or as daily suppression when outbreaks are frequent. DoctorsHome does not diagnose herpes or prescribe antivirals.

Genital herpes
  • Herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2 can cause genital outbreaks.
  • Episodic treatment and daily suppression are the two patterns clinicians explain.
  • Testing, pregnancy, and partner conversations belong with a clinician.

Medications people ask about

Names only. No schedules and no doses.

  • Valacyclovir for an outbreak or for suppression, when a clinician prescribes it
  • Acyclovir for the same kinds of plans
  • Famciclovir in some cases

What a visit usually involves

A history of sores, prior testing, pregnancy status, and kidney problems. Some services will not start a first-time diagnosis online if an exam is needed. Suppression is a longer plan and needs follow-up. This site does not provide that follow-up.

Safety notes

Herpes can be passed even when no sore is visible. Pregnancy and a new outbreak are reasons to talk with a clinician promptly. Antivirals are not a cure. Kidney disease changes how they are used.
