Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is a common reason for an online women’s health visit. Clinicians may discuss metronidazole or clindamycin when the history fits. Discharge and odor have other causes too. DoctorsHome does not diagnose BV or send medicine.

Bacterial vaginosis
  • Metronidazole, as a pill or a vaginal gel, is the medicine people see mentioned most.
  • Clindamycin is another option some clinicians use.
  • Alcohol and metronidazole do not mix. A clinician or the product label explains that restriction.

Medications people ask about

Names from typical telehealth menus, not a treatment plan.

  • Oral metronidazole
  • Vaginal metronidazole gel
  • Clindamycin, oral or vaginal, when a clinician considers it

What a visit usually involves

A questionnaire asks about discharge, odor, itching, pregnancy, and recent treatments. Some services cannot treat BV fully online and will say so. Pregnancy changes which medicines are considered.
